My name is Peter Heery. Firstly, I am a Dad. When I'm not parenting I'm an Accessibility Engineer, Accessible Experience Researcher, and Consultant. I am originally from Northern Ireland, and I now live in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Me, Peter Heery circa 2022

I help you develop practical and endurable approaches for reaching your accessibility goals by producing high-quality, inclusive technology.

I believe accessibility needs to be steered by evidence-based insight and anchored on human experience, not solely technical standards.

I have accumulated thousands of hours conducting accessibility reviews, coding accessible products, and facilitating usability studies with people with disabilities.

I have a practical approach to my work and love to use my cross-functional skills to help create better products.

I have a proven track record of doing this in different technology areas, from consumer applications to B2B (Business to Business) and B2C (Business to Consumer) products across mobile and web.

My services are listed on the hire page, but if you’re unsure about what you need, don’t hesitate to drop me a line.

Accessibility Scotland

I'm a co-founder and organiser of the not-for-profit Accessibility Scotland conference.

I helped create accessibility Scotland in 2016 after we spotted a significant gap – there wasn’t an annual get-together in Scotland that focused on digital accessibility.

"Peter is a rare find. His knowledge in mobile accessibility is as good as it gets plus he really understands how people use the web. He takes his work beyond standards to build truly inclusive and easy to use applications. I'm really looking forward to seeing what he does next and working with him on other projects one day. ".

Henny Swan, Director - Tetralogical.

"Peter has an expertise for accessibility, but also has an immense propensity toward UX and research—an absolutely potent combination, as the work of true inclusion begins in research and design. If you're looking for someone who has both the hard and soft skills to build or contribute to an accessibility or inclusive design practice, he will bring incredible knowledge and compassion. I fully endorse Peter and his work.".

Erica Ellis, Head of Product Equity Design - Uber.

"I was Peter’s manager at Workday, and he was part of a team of researchers who focused on Inclusive Research. During his time with my team, he demonstrated a thoughtful and emphatic approach to including people with disabilities in our design and development practices. He trained and developed other researchers in these approaches, and built a shared understanding about how assistive technology users experience our products. Peter’s passion for building inclusive products, combined with his pragmatic and practical approach to collaborating with engineers, designers, and product managers, make him an excellent fit for any team committed to delivering accessible products.".

Sinéad Davis Cochrane, Senior Research Manager - Workday.

"Working with Peter has been a truly eye opening experience for me over the past few years. His knowledge, insight and dedication to doing the right thing by all users is inspiring. It's hard to convey the seismic mental shift that comes with working with Peter. If most designers are honest, Accessibility and Inclusivity are important aspects that they probably have not spent enough time to understand and consider. Working with Peter changes that. His specialism, practicality and people skills help you level up as a human-centred designer and he's fun to work with. I cannot recommend Peter highly enough".

Tom Cunningham, Principal Product Designer - Design Systems - Workday.

"I worked with Peter over a 3 month period as he assisted the AppleCare Learning and Development team in bringing our training systems and content into compliance with modern accessibility standards. Peter served as our A11y SME, helping us refactor hundreds of courses, rich interactions, and our course player, ensuring an inclusive experience for all of our agents. Peter helped our team understand how to navigate technical accessibility requirements, dug through our code, and guided us through multiple reviews/iterations until we got it right. Peter exhibited the highest degree of professionalism, technical wisdom, and most importantly, patience, as we worked through the process. I owe Peter a debt of gratitude for my current understanding of accessibility and cannot recommend him highly enough. Thank you Peter!".
